There are two different polling organizations that keep track of what television shows the populace is watching. Nielsen is one, and the other is Networked Insights. Nielsen has been around almost since day one of television and is pretty well thought of in the medium.
Programming favorites at this time according to Nielsen ratings are "Grey's Anatomy", "Desperate Housewives", "NBC Sunday Night Football", "Dancing With the Stars", "Two and a Half Men", "CSI Miami", "House", "Heroes", "The OT", and "The Office".
Networked Insights arranges the shows quite differently. Their listings, from most wathed to least, are "Two and a Half Men", "Criminal Minds", "House", "CSI Miami", "NCIS", "Brothers and Sisters", "Cold Case", "Grey's Anatomy", "Family Guy" and "Dancing with the Stars".
Maureen Ryan of the Chicago Tribune picks "Mad Men" as her number one choice, followed closely by "The Shield", "Battlestar Galactica", and "Lost". These picks were not made by the amount of ratings, but rather the editor's personal opinion. This is just one of many personal lists of the best evening television programs, which all give a little insight as to what the average person watches.
Whether or not these polls and opinions reflect your favorite television shows, you can always keep watching the shows you love to support them. Ratings matter, and everyone, even you, is accounted for when it comes time to renew an evening television show for another season.
