American Idol fans have been with this season's shows since January, with auditions all over the country. They saw the worst and the best. The worst, off-key, shockingly confident contestants undoubtedly get airtime for comedy relief.
It's been said that this eighth season has brought better talent than ever to the show. Last night, April 28, had a Rat Pack theme. Jamie Foxx was the mentor, listening and making suggestions before the contestants brought their songs to the stage. (Jamie Foxx? Rat Pack?)
Some of the most beautiful classics were chosen: "The Way you Look :Tonight" by Kris Allen. Randy called it the best thing he ever did. It was romantic and gorgeous. "Someone to Watch Over Me" by Allison Iraheta. Simon said Allison could be in trouble. I say Gershwin didn't want it sung by a pseudo-Janis Joplin. "My Funny Valentine" by Matt Giroud. Matt didn't listen to Jamie Foxx's suggestion, and it came off vanilla and slightly off-key. (Why do the judges always call that "pitchy?") But Simon called it brilliant. Huh? "Come Rain or Come Shine" by Danny Gokey. Danny brought his own gentle then sexy style to this fantastic song. Randy said he could start an album with the song. "Feelin' Good" by Adam Lambert. Adam strutted down the lighted staircase, and the judges said Ryan could never again do that entrance as well. Randy called him too Broadway. Simon said that's like complaining that a cow moos. The women gushed. Adam and Danny are the favorites. There are only three more weeks to find out.
All the men were in suits. Allison was in a dress - not classic, of course, but typical Allison. When I heard Rat Pack, I looked forward to "Ain't That a Kick in the Head," the coolest thing Dean Martin ever did. Nobody did it? They're so young.
