The Transition to Digital TV

Digital Television (DTV) is new technology we all have to prepare for by June 12, 2009. We will have access to better picture and sound quality, as well as multiple programming choices.

Legislation Passed by Congress
Back in 1996, Congress authorized the distribution of a new broadcast channel to each TV station. Then a digital broadcast channel could be started in addition to existing analog channels. The new broadcasting would enable safety communications such as police, fire departments and rescue squad to use the channels. And you don't have a choice if you want your TV to work. As of June 13, TV stations will broadcast only over digital signals. In fact, some broadcasters have already made the change.

What's Better About DTV?
The digital change will enable broadcasters to offer high definition (HD) program or standard definition (SD) programs through "multicasting," which simply means broadcast stations can offer several channels with the same amount of spectrum previously necessary for one analog program. This means more programming choices for viewers.

But I Still Have Rabbit Ears!
Prior to June 12, analog customers can connect a digital to analog converter box. But if you have cable or digital satellite, you're OK with the transition, and multicasting and HDTV can be available to you. (Time to call the cable guy?)

What Else Do I Get with DTV?
If you had analog before, you can say goodbye to transmission problems like ghosts and snow. (In rural areas, that used to be the only reason to get cable.) Now you can move up to HDTV and multicasting.

What's The Deal with HDTV?
This is high definition -- best picture, clarity and color. Set yourself up with Dolby theatre surround-sound. And with wide screen format, maybe this is the time for that big flat screen. You know you've been thinking about it.
