We've seen several examples of breaking up in the movies. Some funny and not so funny breakups appear in "High Fidelity," "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," and, of course, "The Break-Up."
It's a wrenching experience. The worst way to break up used to be a "Dear John" letter. Now that technology has given us new opportunities, texting and e-mail are two examples of what not to do. Just imagine you were on the receiving end. Like it or not, this is a face-to-face conversation.
The advice of breaking up in a crowded public place can be a truly bad idea. Restaurants dislike customers screaming and plates being thrown. Just saying "I'm not happy" is not as good as being specific and very firm. And face it. The break up is followed by a sad recovery period, even for the person giving the bad news.
