The Greeks called it a "soft" exercise. The name comes from the Greek "isos," meaning "same," and "metron," meaning "size." It is an exercise that works by tensing muscles against an object or resisting other muscles. Isometrics has been around for thousands of years. It was relatively unknown until the late 1800's. It became somewhat more famous through books and later documented and shared with the public. Exercise utilizing resistance has been used in yoga and martial arts for hundreds of years.
Isometrics was very much in fashion in the 1960's. But people realized they couldn't achieve instant strength immediately. As with other valuable exercises, isometrics takes time and commitment. It remains very useful to those people who see it as a worthwhile exercise regimen.
