In 1965, the car's biggest year, the Mustang sold for $3,300, and 750,000 were sold. Some purists would say the pony class can't be a true muscle car -- but try telling that to a Mustang driver. Yes, the muscle cars had huge engines and got around 10 miles per gallon. But gas sold for 19 cents a gallon.
In the 1990's Ford redesigned the Mustang with a 6-cylinder (which made far more sense considering the size of the car), and it achieved a newfound popularity. If you want a new muscle car today, you have essentially one choice. The Mustang.
