The Rolling Stones

Back in 1960, a band was formed by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, boyhood friends in Dorford, Kent, England.  The band became known as the Rolling Stones.  They experimented with varied types of music but returned to their original style, rock and roll.  A competition emerged with the Beatles, a huge success at that time, and the styles of the bands were different.  The Beatles were clean cut and wore suits.  The Rolling Stones looked a bit unkempt and used this contrast to create a rivalry. 

In the 1980's the band had various issues and considered breaking up.  Mick Jagger became a single artist, but Keith Richards kept the band together and Jagger returned.  Some have called the Rolling Stones the "World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band" for 40 years.  There were many changes among the band members through the years, but they're still performing now, in their 60's.
