The
Golden Globes are awarded annually for achievement in motion pictures and
television, both domestic and foreign. The Globes are presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The awards are often a harbinger of the
Academy Award winners.
Started
in January 1944, the Golden Globe dinner was held at Los Angeles' 20th Century Fox Studios.Since 1961, the ceremony has come to us from
the Beverly Hilton Hotel.The Golden
Globes are awarded every January, based on only ninety votes from Hollywood's international
journalist community.A motion picture
is eligible if it was released in L.A.
during the previous calendar year; if it was screened for membership; if it invited
active members to a screening; and if an entry form was received.A foreign language film has somewhat
different rules.TV eligibility includes
seven original episodes aired in the U.S; prime time broadcast; and produced in
the U.S. or co-produced by a
U.S.
and foreign company.
The
Globes also honor made for TV pictures and mini-series.The rules are similar to motion picture
eligibility, but it must be broadcast before a theatrical release.TV actor nominees must have appeared in at
least seven episodes.
Unlike
the Oscars, in which a director votes for Best Director, an actor votes for
Best Performance by an Actor, etc. (all academy members vote for Best Picture),
the membership of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association vote for five
nominees in each category, then the final ballot is sent, and members choose
one from each category.Unlike the
Academy Awards broadcast, the Golden Globes are awarded during a dinner
ceremony. There’s plenty of wine on the
table, for the nominees to celebrate or drown their sorrows.
