Celebrities Fleeced by Bernard Madoff

Bernard Madoff, convicted of a $65 billion Ponzi scheme, was sentenced recently to 150 years in prison.  When the news story of Madoff broke, it became clear that his client list contained some famous names.  John Malkovich didn't share the amount lost, nor did Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick, but the Bacons did say they lost an amount they considered a pension.  Often the losses represented money in foundations.  Steven Spielberg, worth an estimated $3 billion, had millions invested with Madoff for the benefit of his Wunderkinder Foundation.

Jeffrey Katzenberg invested and lost considerable funds from his charitable trusts with Madoff.  The Nobel Peace Prize winner and holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel's Foundation for Humanity suffered huge losses.  Most of the foundation's $15.2 million was invested with Madoff.  Arpad Busson, hedge fund manager and fiancé of Uma Thurman, managed millions with Madoff.  Liliane Bettencourt, who inherited L'Oreal from her father, is called the richest woman in Europe.  She invested part of her fortune with Thierry de la Villehuchet, involved with Madoff.  When his firm lost $1.4  billion because of Madoff, Villehuchet committed suicide.

Senator Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey had a family charitable foundation.  The bulk was handled and lost with Madoff.  Other Madoff victims include Philadelphia Eagles owner Norman Broman, New York Mets owner Fred Wilpon and GMAC Financial Services Chairman J. Ezra Merkin.
Madoff's apologies fall on a lot of deaf ears.

How was Madoff discovered?  His sons, Mark and Andrew Madoff, gave him up after he confessed what had  been going on.  They kept a low profile but did tell lawyers that they had received millions in jewelry from their father for Christmas.  The federal government subsequently announced it planned to seize assets from the sons.
