Traveling to the Alamo

The Mission San Antonio de Valero in San Antonio, Texas, known as the Alamo, was built in 1724.  It was the site of the fight for Texas independence between Santa Ana and his 3,000 Mexicans on one side and our 185 heroes on the other, including Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie and Colonel Will Travis (Laurence Harvey in the clip - an interesting choice for the Texas leader), who died in the struggle.  The two million tourists each year are guided through the Alamo, a surprisingly small space, once covering three acres.  They can now visit a restored limestone church and see weapons used in the battle.  There are archived letters showing that the fighters for independence were denied the reinforcements sought before the massacre.

A visit to the Alamo is a touching reminder of another American struggle for independence.  Tours are conducted daily for free.  Each year a Remember The Alamo celebration is held in a two-day reenactment.
