Wasn't
Michael Jordan the first to wear longer shorts under his uniform? They were his lucky college gym shorts. He probably started a new fad. One superstition says never to put your purse
on the floor or you'll never have any money.
Star Jones follows that advice.
(But don't hang it on your restaurant chair. It's not a superstition, but you won't have
any money if it's stolen.) Tiger Woods
finds the color red lucky. His mother
told him it was his power color. Geoffrey
Rush was on the red carpet before he won his Oscar for "Shine." He reached into his pocket for his Daffy Duck
doll. He doesn't go anywhere without
it. Robin Williams carries around a
piece of ivory his father gave him. Cate
Blanchett doesn't carry her talisman around, but she keeps her elf ears from
"Lord of the Rings" on her fireplace mantel. Meat Loaf packs something special on the road
-- two stuffed bears. Can't you just
picture it?
Some
of the greatest superstitions come from the stage. Never wish anyone good luck. Why else would you tell someone to break a
leg? Never ever whistle backstage. And there should never be peanuts
backstage. The word "Macbeth"
should NEVER be said -- it's the worst of bad luck -- even if the play you're
producing is Macbeth! It's "The
Scottish Play." One dancers'
superstition is never to put shoes on a table.
It destroys the balance of nature.
(Don't know how that works in shoe stores.)
Duke Ellington wore a brown suit the day his mother died. He never wore the color brown again. Eartha Kitt would never stay in a hotel room above the sixth floor. It's not really a superstition -- that's how high fire ladders can reach.
