National Park Quarters

In early 2010 the U.S. Treasury will issue new quarter coins.  Quarters have had the image of George Washington since 1932, but the new coins will feature Theodore Roosevelt on the obverse side and various national parks from each state and the District of Columbia on the reverse.  Five new designs per year will be minted for 11 years.  It will be possible to have a second cycle of this minting if the Secretary of the Treasury decides to do so.  These quarters will show another national park or national site.

The design will be decided by the Secretary of the Interior, The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, and the chief executive of each jurisdiction.  The final decision will be made by the Secretary of the Treasury.

The choice of the image of Theodore Roosevelt was decided because of his dedication to national parks and national sites.  He was an early enthusiast for conservation and protection of the parks.  It was Roosevelt's decision to protect 42 million acres of forests and 50 wildlife refuges.  He was ahead of his time concerning the protection of our beautiful land.
