The Heisman
The Heisman Trophy is an honor bestowed each December to the year's outstanding college football player. Started by the Downtown Athletic Club in New York, the "DAC" award was planned to be given for the first time in 1935. In 1936 it was renamed The Heisman Memorial Trophy in honor of football great John Heisman. For the first time in 1968, a duplicate was awarded to the winner's college. The December ceremony deliberately precedes the bowl games.
This year there are three candidates. For the first time the competition includes two previous winners. Colt McCoy, last year's runner-up, is from Texas. Tim Tebow of Florida and Sam Bradford of Oklahoma are the other competitors, both former winners. The favorite is Bradford, after the outstanding numbers attributed to him.
