Although to many James Spader came to light in 1989's sex, lies and videotapes, he had actually appeared in 11 previous movies. Many discovered him in 1986's Pretty in Pink and 1989's Less Than Zero; but sex, lies and videotape was really his breakout role. Spader leaned toward the offbeat, similarly to Johnny Depp. White Palace (1990) with Susan Sarandon is truly not to be missed. Two Days In The Valley from 1996 is another one worth seeing, for Spader as well as other cast members. Crash from 1996, not the 2006 Academy Award winner, is, frankly, weird. So is Secretary from 2002 with Maggie Gyllenhaal. They were both superb and received critical acclaim.
James Spader is a riveting actor. He says more with his face and his eyes than any script can suggest. His movies and TV shows are worth renting or finding on syndication. And this December, he will appear on Broadway in David Mamet's play Race.
James Spader has often said that he has horrible eyesight but is never seen in glasses while playing a role. You'll always see him in glasses offscreen. Don't let James Spader out of your sight.
