The March 2005 pilot opened with a voiceover by Joe, the bartender across the street from the hospital. He's never done the narration again, and it has since opened with the monotone voice of Meredith Grey. She has been and continues to be tragic and whiny. Unless she's swilling tequila. (Remember "Pick me. Choose me. Love me." Ugh!) Sure, she's our protagonist, but just check out how heavily the world weighs on her shoulders. I'll take the bluster of Dr. Bailey anytime.
Thankfully, they seem to have ceased the obnoxious "Seriously?" "Seriously." "Seriously..."
Anyone notice the intrusive music? Even when there's talking, the music is too loud and too new-agey. And they boast about how you can download the music at the end of the show!
Somehow, Cristina Yang doesn't even bother me as much as other characters. But what's with her relationships with Attending of the Month? The Burke storyline was good (too bad he was thrown off the show). Then the double-her-age medical genius from her past arrives for a visit (with everyone's worship) and reveals they had a three-year relationship. Professor-student. Her dalliance with Owen Hunt mixes their neuroses well. What, she has a pattern of sleeping with the boss? Again, tragic more then enjoyable. And Callie? She turns lesbian? Please.
Sure, it's a drama with comic relief. But the drama is more heavy-handed than usual. I'll miss George O'Malley, the most sympathetic character on the show. He pined for Meredith, he married Callie, he fell in love with Izzie, then was dragged down the road by a truck and killed.
I haven't mentioned every character. I know I'll get scathing comments. But I'll admit, I'm still watching.
