"New Moon" grabbed $140.7 million for the first three days in theaters. It placed third on the all-time chart behind "The Dark Knight" at $158.4 million and "Spider-Man 3's" $151.1 million. (These numbers represent first weekends. There are also stats on biggest winter opening, summer, Christmas, November, etc.)
The second weekend, however, took in $42.5 million, a nearly 70% drop. (Sandra Bullock's "Blind Side" grossed more in its second weekend with a 20% increase.) "New Moon's" drop was the biggest ever.
Here's my opinion. "New Moon" moved at a glacial pace. Our damsel in distress, Bella, was an extreme downer. She had two facial expressions: numb and sad. Even when she was a passenger on a motorcycle, calling it a "rush," the face didn't change. Wouldn't a fight between two enormous wolves evoke a look of fear? Nope, not on her face. Okay, they were computer generated, but she's an actor. Right? Amazing that a girl this dull would have two great-looking men caring about her and protecting her. I hope the tween audience doesn't imitate her lack of emotion. This could create a lot of boring women. This is two hours of my life I won't get back.
Regarding the 70% decrease in audience, maybe all the tweens who camped out before the first weekend told their friends. It's enough to watch Sandra Bullock.
