Beckett is a beautiful, by-the-book detective who went into police work after her mother was murdered, a crime that has not been solved. She resents the constant presence of Castle, but they build a successful relationship filled with sarcastic one-liners. His mystery research and the actions of the murderous characters in his books lend theories that are often helpful in the real life whodunits. Castle is a bit of a wiseguy who brings sophisticated humor, sometimes silliness, to the crime-solving.
Beckett is assisted by a brilliant female medical examiner, Dr. Lanie Parish, who is her friend and sees her connection with Castle. Beckett is vehement about their lack of chemistry, but Parish urges her to go for it. Detectives Ryan and Esposito do the legwork (that always leads to the murders' solutions in one hour) and add humor to the show.
Some of the most fun takes place in Castle's home. If you can concentrate on the dialogue while admiring his magnificent loft, he's surrounded by his 15-year-old daughter Alexis (living proof of the beauty that can come of of Ireland), who seems more mature than her father. Castle's mother, Martha, also lives with them. Her most recent husband left town with her life savings. Martha gets mostly punchlines. She is an actress who still seeks and finds work in New York and has a social life that puts Castle's to shame.
"Castle" was picked up for a second season and will run at least until May 2010. Hope the fake crimes will continue and keep this series on the air.
