Who Has Won the Most Oscars?Who has won the most Oscars? The answer is a person many will know of, but few might guess: Walt Disney. Walt Disney, the creator of the ever-popular Mickey Mouse and many other beloved cartoon characters, has been nominated 59 times for Oscars and won 26 awards, four of which were honorary. The legendary director, producer, actor, and animator (mostly in his early works) received many of his awards for the category "Best Short Subject, Cartoons." He also received honorary awards for both the films Fantasia, an animated film that features no dialogue and has prominent classical music in the background throughout, and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the first animated feature film produced by Disney. Not to mention, it was also the first fully animated feature film to be produced in America. The film's story was based on that of Snow White, the fairy tale written by the Brothers Grimm. While many regarded the film as a huge risk and predicted it would lead to disaster for Disney and his company before its release (the film had to receive additional financing from Bank of America before it was finished after it ran out of funds), it received a standing ovation at the end of its premier, and was the top grossing film of 1938. The Academy Award that Disney won for the film was presented to him by Shirley Temple, who gave him one large Oscar statuette and seven smaller statuettes. The film also was the first American film to have a soundtrack album released conjunctively. Walt Disney has left a lasting foundation of work that continues to influence filmmakers and animators everywhere. Even when you wonder who has won the most Oscars in the same year, the answer is Walt Disney, who did so in 1954 (when he won four Oscars). His other contributions to culture include his documentaries and his development of the Disneyland theme park. |
